Legion of Everblight: Craelix

Big push right now for me getting caught up on my Legion models. With the new theme changes, this guy is a free option in two themes now so should probably have him painted I guess.

Legion of Everblight: Ice Witches

Been awhile since I posted. Haven't been painting much but have dove back in lately. Right now I'm trying to get most of my Legion models done in preparation for the theme force changes as I plan on coming back to Legion play for awhile. Ice Witches make their way into just about any list that isn't Primal Terrors so seemed a good place to start.

Legion: Thagrosh the Messiah Conversion WIP

Took a little break from painting my Convergence army to work on this Thagrosh conversion. Always loved the model but the wings that come with the model are a bit on the small side. I chose to use the wings from a Warhammer 40k Tyranid Hive Tyrant model. They are quite large, maybe even a bit too large but I think that's okay. It completely changes the look of the model.

It took me a fair bit of time to slowly remove material from the model's shoulders and the wings in order to get the fit and pose I was looking for. It came out pretty good and I'm looking forward to putting some paint on it.

Legion: Throne of Everblight Magnetized WIP

This model is ridiculously tall which makes it extremely difficult to transport. I've magnetized it in the middle so it can be transported in two pieces. The top is fairly heavy so I used 4 pretty large magnets and the hold is very secure. I have a second one that I still need to assemble and will be doing the same with that one.

Finally!!!
So glad to have completed work on this model! I've spent a ridiculous amount of time working on this one. Easily the most time I've ever spent on any one painting project. I don't think I even want to try and estimate how many hours. It's finished though and I am very happy with how it's turned out. It's certainly among my best work if not thee best.

Let's take a quick look at the progression of this of this project. Here's what this project looked like at the start.

The next three pictures were pulled from the net as I didn't get any shots of my own project until after it was completely assembled and primed.

Assembly and gap filling. The gaps that needed filled were considerable and took a good amount of time. I also magnetized the larger set of wings for easy transport.

Unfortunately this is the first WIP shot that I took of mine. Primed in white, black base coat and first highlight on scales applied using an airbrush.

Onto the blue skin tones and initial highlights. Black areas were masked off and the blues again applied with an airbrush.

Then began the long arduous process of applying all the brushwork and fine highlights. This took an extremely long time as this is a huge model with so much surface area.

The finished product was many months in the making but it is pretty rewarding to see the end result despite the loooooong road to get there.

Legion: Archangel WIP 2

Finally getting back to putting some more work into this guy and hopefully finishing within the next week or two. You can check out WIP part 1 here in case you missed it before.

It's an amazing model and deserves my best efforts thus it's taking me awhile to get it finished. It can be pretty daunting painting a model this size and knowing that you'll have to put in quite a few hours to make it come out the other side how you envision it.

Legion: Succubus

This model has been sitting around base coat painted only for well over a year. Finally getting around to finishing a proper paint job. For as much as this model makes it into my lists, it really should have a half way decent paint job. It's not my best but it'll do.

Legion: Annyssa Ryvaal

Been using this model a lot in my Twins list to great success. She's an expensive solo to include in a list at 8 pts but she sticks around all game, consistently contributing every turn. It's also a great looking model and I now try and squeeze her into a lot more lists then I used to.

Legion: Absylonia, Daughter of Everblight

It's taken me shamefully long to get this model painted and get some table time with Abby 2 lists. It's a great model and was easy to paint.

Legion: Saeryn & Rhyas Talons of Everblight

Over the last couple months I've been putting these two on the table quite a bit and have been having a blast playing them. It's taken me way longer then it should have to get them painted. Glad to have them done but pretty disappointed in the quality of these miniatures. Privateer Press is just so hit and miss with their quality. These models are even among the relatively new for them but they are just nowhere near as good as say Fyanna 2. There is next to no detail in the face and detail in other places on the models is very soft instead of well defined.

Anyways, they are finished and they look fine on the table but are far from my best work.

Legion Archangel WIP

This model is one of the best sculpts that Privateer Press has ever produced. I've wanted one for years but the model's rules in MK2 were pretty terrible. However, it's MK3 rules are pretty solid so I finally picked one up.

I've since stalled on this project, regrettably I've been pulled away to other projects. Hoping to get back to it soon to finish.

Ice Themed Table for Warmachine & Hordes

Ever since I started my Legion army a few years back I've often thought of building an ice table complete with terrain, zones, and flags to match my ice based Legion army. Well, I finally got around to doing and I'm really pleased with the way it turned out.

The base of the board is just foam insulation board that I purchased at Lowes. You can pick these up in 2' x 8' or 4' x 8' sheets. I cut a 2' x 8' sheet in half to make my 4' x 4' playing surface.

First steps involved creating some texture on the board. I started with a small tub of spackle and applied it unevenly to form some raised areas on the board. I also created a few crater like areas on the board.

In order to create some additional texture as well as seal the board, I used a mixture made up of Elmer's glue, snow flock, and water and painted the mixture onto the entire surface. This combination gives a nice texture to the board but is still relatively soft unlike other boards that use sand to create texture. I also created a good mix of terrain to match the board primarily out of again insulation foam or foam core board. (I don't have any pictures at this stage.) 

After the texture mix on the board dried, I painted the whole board using white Kilz paint to give all areas of the board a uniform shade before applying any other paint. I then coated the whole board in a light blue color.

The process for painting the board and terrain pieces was relatively simple and is pretty much identical to how I've done ice effects before with the exception of the use of crackle paint. Check out one of my previous tutorials here. Basically I just started with a base coat of a light blue color and dry brushed up a couple layers to pure white. 

The zones were cut out of canvas and work perfectly.

The last steps involved filling the crater like spots on the board with clear crackle paint. Once that was dry, the board, terrain, zones, objectives, and flags all got two coats of clear coat. Lastly, I added a bit of snow flock sparingly on various spots of the board and terrain.

All done and ready for play!
